Crowns

To save a severely damaged tooth, Dr. Martin may suggest a crown, or cap. These restorations are permanently cemented over teeth to restore shape and strength. Where more strength is needed, porcelain fused to gold provides both esthetics and improved strength. In high-stress areas with low esthetic demands, like back molars, gold onlay are still the most conservative and durable restoration a dentist can offer. Tooth-colored crowns restore shape, strength, and maintain the all-white beauty of a gorgeous smile.

Crowns can be fabricated from various materials, each of which has advantages and disadvantages:

Gold crowns and onlays are still, by far, the strongest, most predictable restorations we have. They are still highly recommended for the back molars, where cosmetics is less of a concern, but strength is critical.

Porcelain crowns over a gold core are quite strong, but occasionally (rarely) fracture, especially on back molars.

The latest generation of all-ceramic crowns is truly beautiful! These crowns produce results that look like new, natural enamel. However, as a general statement, the all-ceramic restorations are a bit more fragile and should be used with caution in the back of the mouth.

Placement of a crown typically takes two visits. At your first appointment, Dr. Martin will make a precise model of your tooth and fabricate a temporary crown to wear until the permanent one is finished. Once we receive the laboratory-fabricated crown, you will return to our North Dallas office so that Dr. Martin can permanently attach the restoration and make adjustments, if necessary.
