To save a severely damaged tooth, Dr. Martin may suggest a crown, or cap. These restorations are permanently cemented over teeth to restore shape and strength. Where more strength is needed, porcelain fused to gold provides both esthetics and improved strength. In high-stress areas with low esthetic demands, like back molars, gold onlays are still the most conservative and durable restoration a dentist can offer. Tooth-colored crowns restore shape, strength, and maintain the all-white beauty of a gorgeous smile.
Crowns can be fabricated from various materials, each of which has advantages and disadvantages:
Placement of a crown typically takes two visits. At your first appointment, Dr. Martin will make a precise model of your tooth and fabricate a temporary crown to wear until the permanent one is finished. Once we receive the laboratory-fabricated crown, you will return to our North Dallas office so that Dr. Martin can permanently attach the restoration and make adjustments, if necessary.
Crowns can also be used to replace one to three consecutive missing teeth. This restorative solution referred to as a bridge or fixed bridge relies on dental crowns placed over teeth on either side of a vacated socket to support one or more replacement teeth. The entire prosthetic is crafted and placed as a single unit over the course of two or more visits.
For patients with extensive tooth loss or damage, we may recommend a full-mouth reconstruction plan using a series of dental crowns and fixed bridges. Full-mouth reconstruction is an extensive treatment plan that carefully assesses each tooth, and includes any number of cosmetic and restorative treatments to repair and fortify damaged or decayed teeth. Each plan is as unique as the smile it treats, and once patients complete their full-mouth reconstruction, they’ll be able to smile confidently.
Say good-bye to the dark, ugly metal fillings of the past. Composite resin fillings offer attractive repairs that replace tooth decay and actually reinforce natural tooth structure. A tooth restored with a composite filling is much stronger and less prone to fracture than the same tooth with a similar-sized silver filling. Tinted to match your natural teeth, resin fillings will blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile, creating strong, esthetically pleasing restorations.
If you need a cavity filled or have your old amalgam fillings replaced, call Dr. Martin’s office to make an appointment. Located in North Dallas, we serve the surrounding areas, including Addison, Richardson, Carrollton, and Plano.
At Dentistry by Design, we strive to offer our patients a variety of treatment options to meet any need, and that includes working with the highest quality restorative materials available. Dental restorations are available in a variety of materials that each have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, but we often recommend metal-free, all-ceramic restorations for the following reasons:
Dr. Martin was a pioneer of laser dentistry in Texas and still remains one of the only masters in Laser Dentistry certified to teach.. He worked as a consultant and trainer for several of the earliest dental laser manufacturers. Dr. Martin has achieved mastership in the Academy of Laser Dentistry and is one of the few dentists in Texas certified as an instructor by the Academy. Laser dentistry virtually eliminates pain, swelling, and bleeding caused by traditional soft tissue oral surgery. Dr. Martin uses lasers to perform cosmetic gum lifts, crown lengthening, periodontal therapy, and tissue biopsies.
Visiting the dentist may not be your first thought after being diagnosed with sleep apnea, but the dentist offers comfortable, portable oral appliance therapy that allows patients to sleep soundly. Many patients diagnosed with sleep apnea, the cessation of breathing for ten or more seconds at a time, find themselves unable to adjust to treatment using a CPAP system. For these patients, those who travel frequently, and those who do not achieve adequate relief with CPAP alone, a custom oral appliance may be beneficial.
If you’ve damaged a large portion of your teeth, we’re happy to help you begin the process of completely restoring your smile by reviewing all of your treatment options and designing an ongoing care plan that meets your full-mouth reconstruction needs, fits your schedule, and doesn’t exceed your budget.
